My Spiritual Discipline Response

7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Spiritual discipline is something every premeditated Christian must evidence to measure growth in their walk with Christ. While having a biblically supported personal theology rate high on the list, unless one practices what they believe, with an unquestionable understanding of why they hold those truths sacred, those beliefs are of no use. In this lesson, we learned about various types of spiritual disciplines, in addition to how to train oneself to become more spiritually disciplined.

Word of the Day: orgulous

Definition: adjective Archaic. haughty; proud. How is it used? Quote~ “The princes orgulous, their high blood chafed / Have to the port of Athens sent their ships … William Shakespeare, Troilus and Cressida, 1623.” https://www.dictionary.com/e/word-of-the-day

There are many examples of spiritual disciplines; while the article does not cover each one it appears to have highlighted those that are vital.

1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.” Proverbs 12:1

Whenever a person experiences the presence of the Holy Ghost it becomes necessary to acknowledge, respect and obey it’s authoritative and anointed power, which leads to becoming spiritually disciplined. Evidence that one has paid the proper respect to the power of the Holy Ghost is revealed through the spiritual formation process of a believer’s discarnate journey, resulting in developing a closer relationship with God.

Basically, the Holy Ghost prompts divine change that is dependent upon the acceptance of applied biblical teaching that when internalized, provokes a person to allow God to change his or her heart, mind, and life. This initial change can be thought of like an incubator stage of coming to Christ because powers much greater than human ones are still needed to strengthen the believer as he or she grows in the spirit.

Inevitably, one also begins to see life events differently. For instance, he or she comes to understand that “what the world meant for bad God makes good,” The longer believer’s practice disciplines the stronger in Christ they become, and the more their lives begin to look like the life of Jesus.  There are critical stages every believer must go through in order to become intricately conjoined with the Father. One of those stages is practicing sound spiritual discipline; which helps us bring order and spiritual balance into our lives.

Perhaps, understanding the importance of order can contribute to developing an appetite for spiritual harmony. “Discipline is defined as “training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior.” Discipline is not part of the sin nature, but it is a natural component of the Christian life.” Houdman, M (2016)

Selected Spiritual Disciplines

The discipline of Abstinence ~ The meaning of abstinence is to refrain from doing something you enjoy doing. For spiritual abstinence, it is important to remember that any claim of abstinence in honor of God must involve abstaining from something that is important to the person abstaining. In other words, doing so must hurt and be sacrificial.  I have chosen to drastically reduce the time I spend on Facebook and redirect the time I reduce to becoming closer to Jesus by spending more time in the Word.

The discipline of Submission ~ Submitting oneself to God totally is an absolute necessary discipline for Christians. God is a jealous God, and He wants it all. This means that a person must not be luke-warm in their Christian walk.

The discipline of Engagement ~ In applying discipline to how we engage it appears that we should perhaps choose how, when and what we engage our time and efforts in. Engaging in activities and actions that lead others to Christ seems to be one of the most spiritually disciplined activities of any believer.

Tip– As it may be, perfecting one’s spiritual discipline involves a change of heart, the way one lives and submission to the Lord. In the absence of either, it may be unrealistic to believe that it is possible to live a Godly life. Once a person makes up in his or her mind to follow the Lord’s lead, a teachable spirit manifest within. In order to learn how to be spiritually disciplined, it is necessary to be trainable. God gave each one of us free will to lead a Godly life and He gifts us with grace, forgiveness, and guidance to make living Godly a possibility. It is possible to live a God-centered life, out of habit
