God and Humanity

HumanityPsalm 8

Genesis pontificates on how God created humanity in his image while Psalm 8 adds clarity to the essence of human beings using metaphors that define man’s place, purpose, and responsibility as

children of God. We learn from Psalm 8 that God establishes a stronghold against the enemy through the praise of children and infants. Moreover, both passages make known God’s high opinion of man by revealing the far-reaching scope of authority He grants to him.

6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their  feet 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Psalm 8: 6-8

In as much, Genesis 1: 27-28 echoes Psalm 8: 6-8 by showcasing evidence of God’s boundless affection and love for His creation in revealing that God gave man authority to rule over everything under his feet, all flocks, and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky and all the fish in the sea, and all that swim the paths of the seas. The above Scriptures express the same truth in different ways collectively.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1: 27-28

Psalm 8 helps us understand what it means to be human through poetry and metaphors intentionally framed to make it easier for man to understand. Metaphors are a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. Metaphors are used many times throughout the bible.

Through metaphors and poetry found in Psalm 8 we learn about the God who forms us in Psalm 8: 1, “how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory
in the heavens.”

The reality of living in our world as created beings is that God is Creator; we are created, which means that God existed before his creations and therefore is set apart from man, yet in control of him, and the world. God reveals Himself through what he has made by not allowing what He has made to be effective, functional, prosperous or relevant without His involvement.
