SO OF GOD SON OF MAN DISCUSSION

God sent His Son in the image of the man because He desires to have a relationship with His children. Just imagine, “suppose Jesus looked like an elephant or Snake,” could any one of us relate?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Learning Activity #4 Son of Man and Son of God Discussion

God sent His Son in the image of the man because He desires to have a relationship with His children. Just imagine, “suppose Jesus looked like an elephant or Snake,” could any one of us relate? The all-knowing God knew His children would not receive an image, unlike their own. The title “Son of Man” establishes Jesus’s likeness to those He came to live among and save.  The image and characteristics of Jesus are poignantly described in Revelations 1: 12 – 16.

3 Characteristics of Jesus

Faithful ~ Jesus Christ did all things by faith, even performing mighty miracles such as walking on water.

Prayerful ~ Jesus Christ prayed often for friends and enemies as well as for help during trials.

Wise ~Luke 2:52  “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”

Seeing ourselves in Jesus inspires us to want to be more like Him. Jesus came to save sons of men, as a Man of God, and Son of God. As a man, he presented himself to man to bear the Son of God’s resemblance in the image of the Man of God. Jesus assumed man’s likeness to draw him nearer to God the Father. The Son of Man and the Son of God are One. Undoubtedly, Jesus identified with humanity.

Humanness

Jesus is Son of God, was, and is, fully human, born as a man. His mother’s name was Mary, conceived by immaculate conception. Matthew 1:18, 20, 24-25; Galatians 4:4. Jesus was both God and human at the time of His birth. Divine characteristics of Jesus include God, His Father, blessing Mary with seed for conception, making Jesus both the Son of God and Mary’s son. Mary’s seed made Jesus Human, God’s seed made Him the Son of God, and the Son of Man.

Jesus, as Son of Man. “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.” Genesis (1:26)

“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew (20:28)

“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” Matthew (16:13)

The phrase ‘Son of Man’ is used 32 times by Matthew, 14 times by Mark, 26 times by Luke, and 12 times by John, for 84 occurrences in the Gospels. Adding the occurrences mentioned below in Acts, Hebrews, and Revelation brings 88 in the New Testament. Of those incidences, the phrase is always on the lips of Jesus except for five times: John 12:34; Acts 7:56; Heb. 2:6; Rev. 1:13; 14:14.  Jesus truly identified with humanity. Son of Man is one of the 34 titles given to Jesus in the book of Revelations: http://bibleview.org/en/Bible/RevelationPartOne/Jesus/

The mission of the Son of Man is really two-fold.  First, we have a negative view of His mission. We see this in the fact that He came not to destroy, for it is contrary to, His nature to destroy.  Second, the positive aspect of the Mission of Jesus is noted when we see that He came to save and indicates humanity’s preciousness.

I am pleased with how much I have learned about the nature and essence of “the Son of God, Son of Man, and Man of God subject. I love Mark: 10:45. Jesus shares many scriptures that serve to teach us how to live a God-centered life. However, and in my opinion, few are more profound than that of Mark 10: 45. When someone reads this scripture, unless he or she is bursting with pride, all you can do is humble yourself, even if only in your head. Basically, this scripture tells you to stop struggling with the “man or woman in the mirror” because it is not about servicing the face you see looking back at you.

Being a Christian is a lifelong commitment to helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Humility is a beautiful thing and a stress reliever as well. The day an individual realizes nothing on earth belongs to him, or she is the day burdens of the world are lifted from the shoulder. Besides, this becomes the day God takes control, which positions one to carry out his will.

The deity, the humanness, and divine presence prove Jesus is Lord, God, Savior, Son of Man, and Son of God wrapped in one. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (ESV)  This scripture speaks volumes about Jesus’s character. This particular scripture tells us with certainty how Jesus wants us to behave. Everybody cannot be the hostess; somebody has to serve and feel good about it. Jesus also shows respect for His Father by identifying himself as the Son of God and Son of Man, whom God is Father to all.

Son of Man Jesus “came not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

The title assumed by Jesus, ‘The Son of Man,’ affirms His incarnation, his real humanity.  In fact, it implies that Jesus holds humanity.  It is remarkable that throughout the Gospels, no person ever addressed Christ as the Son of Man or even called Him by that name. It is, however, the most common title used by Him in speaking of Himself.
